Happy Man – Jungle

Jungle are a group from London whose music is an atmospheric update of ’70s funk and soul. Led by musicians identified only as J and T, Jungle formed in early 2013 and released their first singles — the lazing, hypnotic dance grooves “Platoon” and “The Heat” — for the Chess Club label in July and October that year. The former gained Jungle a significant amount of notice for its striking video, which featured only the athletic dance moves of six-year-old English B-girl Terra. The duo expanded Jungle into a seven-piece band for live performances, as they did not want to simply play the music from their laptops in concert. Tickets for the group’s first London performance in December 2013 reportedly sold out within 24 hours of going on sale. Along with the likes of Banks, Sampha, Chance the Rapper, and winner Sam Smith, Jungle were selected for the long list of the BBC Sound of 2014 poll. That March, the group went on tour with opening (for HAIM) and headlining dates scheduled for performances in France, the Netherlands, the U.K., and the U.S., including the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. Jungle’s self-titled debut album arrived on XL in July of 2014. It was well-received, hitting the Top 10 in the U.K. album charts and eventually being certified gold, in addition to appearing on several year-end best-of lists. The band maintained a busy touring schedule during 2015, playing festivals such as Glastonbury and Belgium’s Dour Festival, in addition to sold-out concerts at large venues such as London’s Brixton Academy. ~ Andy Kellman
